Tim Robbins plays Andy Dufresne who has likely been wrongfully committed of the murder of his adulterous wife. He is sent to Shawshank prison where the warden is corrupt and cruel to the inmates. Dufresne befriends a man named Red, played by Morgan Freeman, who is also serving time while waiting for parole.
Over time, Dufresne, who was a banker, becomes the tax consultant for many of the prison guards. He also comes into contact with another prisoner named Brooks, who works in Shawshank's library. The film follows the fates of Brooks, Dufresne and Red, as each pursues their freedom, redemption and life outside of prison.
One of the most inspirational developments in the story is the way that Dufresne escapes from prison. However, for those who have not seen the movie, to give away this plot twist would be a great injustice.
