In DC yoga studio, students become teachers

In our Washington, DC yoga classes, an instructor will often gently remind students that someday they may find themselves in his or her shoes. That's because Dahn Yoga espouses the philosophy that enthusiasts will eventually learn so many mind-body techniques that they'll be perfectly placed to be teachers themselves.

This transition from pupil to master forms the subject of an article recently published by the Washington Post. The newspaper featured a group of yoga students who went through rigorous testing to prove that they were ready to be instructors.

The gauntlet they ran (or really, posed) their way through included strenuous postures and difficult stretches.

One student, Gale Koritansky, told the news source that her session lasted four full hours.

"Whew!" she exclaimed. "That was longer than the GRE!"

While we certainly agree that it's important to test budding yoga teachers, our rites of passage at Dahn Yoga are much less physically taxing. Instead, they concentrate on imbuing practitioners with a deep, complex sense of the connections between body and mind.

Once we see that a student is ready, we are all too happy to ask them to help run one of our DC yoga studios!

Many children, families can’t get enough yoga

As a parent, it is tempting to believe that at the end of the day, you are more in need of stress relief than your children. However, the anxieties of childhood have the ability to build to a fever pitch, which may partially explain why some kids love Dahn Yoga so much.

In his "Frugal Family" section of the Fort Greene-Clinton Hill Patch, advice columnist John Rouse notes that as a child, he fell absolutely head over heels for yoga.

He recalls playing with friends in a neighbor's basement, where a yoga instructor-in-training gave the block's children free yoga lessons. Rouse adds that while his 5-year-old brother could not sit still for a single session, the calm and focus imparted by yoga gave the now-writer a sense of attention that he could apply to school, sports and family life.

This is one reason that Dahn Yoga offers family-based classes. In the Burke Dahn Yoga Center near Washington, DC, for instance, parents often sign their children up for yoga instruction. The majority of referrals for the center come from families.

By choosing yoga as a weekly activity, family members may feel a greater sense of connection to each other and to the community.

Center offers Dahn Yoga spring classes, workshops

Dahn Yoga classes are available in hundreds of urban and rural centers in the U.S., and one Dahn Yoga community in particular is offering a number of classes and workshops for the spring months.

Several Dahn Yoga centers in New York have opened house events for spring classes, which will instruct members on everything from basic yoga techniques and breathing methods to stretching, tai chi and meridian channeling.

The benefits of yoga are manifold. Studies have shown that taking even a few minutes each day to relax in a quiet setting and stretch or meditate can make a big difference in one's mental state.

Likewise, the stretching and posturing of yoga can have benefits for bodily health. Flexing and relaxing the muscles in a non-strenuous manner can keep the body loose and limber, allowing its tissues to process the toxins within them.

The mind-body system behind Dahn Yoga ensures that corporeal well-being is never pursued without keeping mental serenity in mind. Dahn Yoga centers in the Bronx, Great Neck, Forest Hills, Flushing and Brooklyn Heights, New York, are offering long-time participants and new members the chance to close the gap between mind, body and spirit.

Inmates, yoga’s relaxation techniques makes the news

Sometimes Dahn Yoga news stories about relaxation techniques pale in comparison to local or national news items that are ostensibly about the same thing. Recently, one such story came out of Aspen, Colorado, where a large group of men will be practicing weekly yoga positions while under guard. The catch, of course, is that they are inmates in the Pitkin County Jail.

These men will begin regularly engaging in regular yoga-related relaxation techniques, starting on March 18, the Aspen Daily News reports.

Jail administrator Don Bird told the newspaper that keeping the prisoners calm and working to reduce their stress levels can have a positive impact on the jail environment.

"They come to jail as punishment, not for punishment," Bird said, quoted by the news source. "We want behavior modification while they’re in there, and want to de-stress the jail atmosphere as much as possible."

While it is not currently practiced in a penitentiary environment, Dahn Yoga makes news for a similar reason – namely, its practitioners can use the stretching and breathing exercises to decompress, whether it's at work, at home or at one of the hundreds of Dahn Yoga centers nationwide.

Practitioners say yoga, Christianity can naturally amplify one another

People of all faiths can perform Dahn Yoga exercises, as well as relaxation techniques culled from other traditions of meditation or self-exploration, according to experts and casual members alike. The question of the congruity of practicing Christianity and yoga, for instance, has been addressed in a number of U.S. news sources recently.

While some individuals feel that the two disciplines are mutually exclusive, many practitioners of yoga attest that it is simply a system of stretching, breathing, exercises and relaxation techniques compatible with any number of faiths.

The Roanoke Times recently noted that some Christian churches even modify yoga to suit their needs, renaming poses after biblical allusions and practicing yoga as a way to heal the body and connect with the community.

"When I got the opportunity to combine my physical activity with my Christian point of view, it was something I felt I could use to connect with other people in the church and maybe enhance their spiritual experience," instructor Nancy Harvey told the news source.

Dahn Yoga exercises aim to provide a bridging of the gaps between mind, body and spirit, while giving all the latitude in the world to one's personal beliefs.

Dahn Yoga DVD helps skiers balance on the slopes and in life

In a DVD newly released by Dahn Yoga, exercises help practitioners balance life at work with life on the slopes. The weather has begun to get warmer, the days are getting longer, but that does not mean that skiing in Colorado is out of the question yet.

Called Ski Knees: The Skinny on Healthy Knees, the video is the next in a series of instructional demonstrations called DahnTV Winter Health.

The DVD contains a range of stretches, exercises and relaxation techniques that can keep the joints limber and prepare them from the stresses they may encounter coming down the mountain.

An estimated 45 percent of all skiing-related injuries involve the knees, according to the Sports Injury Clinic. Running through a few simple Dahn Yoga exercises may mean the difference between a top-notch ski weekend and a torn ACL.

The video provides knee-bending methods that can strengthen the knees. The narrator also recommends that skiers be a little conservative when flying downhill, since they might prefer still having a life to balance at the end of the day.

Ultimately, the soothing essence behind all Dahn Yoga exercises is the reconnection of the body and mind.

In Washington, DC, diverse groups discover the benefits of yoga

Whether it's about a more Americanized version of the meditative art or one as exotic as Dahn Yoga, news about the benefits of yoga coming from Washington, DC, is often positive.

Delaware Online recently profiled a cycling gym in the district that integrates yoga positions and with the use of exercise bikes. The news source said that its courses are quite popular, particularly since its owner, Marc Caputo, believes it can "change your mind, change your body, change your life."

The American Lawyer reported that yoga has also invaded that world of law, noting in some law firms yoga has overtaken golf as the relaxing activity of choice. Dickstein Shapiro is one firm that brings yoga instructors to its offices to lead yoga classes, the news source said.

The benefits of yoga may even extend to psychiatric therapy, as evidenced by an ongoing study at DC's Walter Reed Army Medical Center that is looking into treating army veterans for post-traumatic stress disorder, the Washington Post reports.

The news about Dahn Yoga is often just as glowing, with many members noting that its calming, unstressful classes provide a sanctuary in which to pursue personal development and growth.
