The Origin of Preconception

Our preconceptions prevent us from being flexible in thought. Your preconceptions feel natural because you are so used to them. And because they are so natural, you do not even notice that they are there. Each one of us has a unique way of looking at things because we each have a particular set of preconceptions that color everything we observe. We do not even know that we have these preconceptions. And even if we do, we have a difficult time prying ourselves from the intellectual and emotional patterns that these preconceptions have imprinted upon our brain. Therefore, we have a very difficult time accepting new perspectives or opinions.

Our preconceptions were formed through our personal experiences and the socioeconomic culture in which we were raised. Therefore, it is doubly difficult for an individual to break out of a cultural preconception. Even if one were to break out of a certain cultural preconception, it is far more challenging than to actualize one’s newly found conceptual liberties through actions. You would need extraordinary judgment, courage, and a sense of responsibility.

We have preconceptions about virtually everything in life, from selr-identity, to gender roles, to common courtesy, to ideas about appropriateness, concepts of ownership, thoughts about money, fantasies about love, definitions of success, and much, much more.

When you “versatilize” your brain, you gain the ability to see many of these same things in different ways, enhancing your own powers of creativity. With an open and flexible brain, you will encounter even the minutest situations with a novelty and freshness that will trigger the most innovative solutions possible. Your life will become richer.
